On top of making for a softer, more supple feel, and better water resistance, this treatment also results in what’s called the “pull-up effect” — a phenomenon in which a lighter, underlying color is revealed when the hide is stretched or scratched. This also allows pull-up leather to develop a particularly rich and characterful patina.
